Hunger & Thirst Foundation

Farm in a
Bag

Our mission transcends simply providing nourishment; it's a progressive pursuit to transform urban agriculture. By pioneering new methods of crop growth, we're fostering a sustainable future.

Our initiative, grounded in partnership and innovation, invites everyone to be a part of this transformative journey towards a greener tomorrow.

Other Agri Initiatives

During the past 18 years, The Hunger and Thirst Foundations has run a few agricultural and enterprise development projects in partnership with various funders. The Foundation follows a holistic approach whereby the community is empowered to look after their own, therefore a self-sustainable solution.

IMPACT
Feeding the Future

Aligning with UN SDGs #2 and #5, we're tackling hunger at its root by promoting sustainable agriculture practices that empower communities, nourish populations, and cultivate a future generation of female farmers.

Intensive Sheep Farming

Within harsh hot and dry conditions, intensive sheep farming brings a sustainable Agri solution. The profit generated from the Agri development programs, in the form of intensive sheep farming, funds both the Socio Economic and Enterprise Development projects in the community.

The Model

1’000 ewes incorporated into a continuous cycle and in groups of:

  • Young ewes - preparing for synchronisation at an average age of 12 months (based on weight and condition);

  • Ewes with the Rams and preparing for lambing (5 months);

  • Lambing pens- Feedlot A & B (3 months);

  • Weaning of lambs – Rams prepared for Abattoir (3 months) and Ewes prepared to be incorporated into the Young Ewes group (3months). Adult Ewes are conditioned after weaning (3 months);

  • Synchronisation cycle commences again.

Chicken Pens

The purpose of Enterprise Development is to get the Community economically active instead of passively depending on grants. We provide small-scale farmers with the necessary pens, chickens and food for the chickens on their own premises. This empower families to generate a sustainable income for their households.

The Model

  • 10 farmers each build the pen themselves to encourage a feeling of ownership and manage 10 chicken pens.

  • This expands to 100 farmers in the community, each managing 10 chicken pens in the first year.

300’000 free-range eggs will be produced per month. In addition, 10 of these farmers act as mentors and generate an additional income for their households.

Access to Food

The Foundation’s Farm in a Bag introduces groundbreaking agricultural practices. By using Ton Bags filled with a specialised mix of soil and organic fertiliser, they enable crop cultivation, thereby feeding the hungry and establishing a sustainable, scalable model of agriculture. This method involves training future farmers in cultivation and trade skills, fostering community growth, ensuring food security, and contributing to sustainable economic development.
